2/6/19 AMD Market Share Gain, Softbank Sells Nvidia Stake AMD 23.31 to 23.26

Market share gains by AMD (Q4 2017 to Q4 2018): Server 0.8% to 3.2 %, Desktop 12% to 15.8%, Laptop 6.6% to 12.1%.

Laptop gain is encouraging, and this should get even better with the improved Ryzen Mobile 2nd gen and better mobile driver support direct from AMD. There has been many complaints about OEMs not pushing out the needed new mobile drivers.

Special mention to server market share by AMD, explaining why they hit their mid single digit target: “Mercury Research captures all x86 server class processors in their server unit estimate, regardless of device (server, network or storage), whereas the estimated 1P and 2P TAM provided by IDC only includes traditional servers. We used IDC’s server forecast of the 1P and 2P server TAM of roughly 5M units to compute our server market share estimates. We believe that in Q4 2018 we achieved ~5% unit share of the 1P and 2P server market addressed by our EPYC processors (as defined by IDC).

Softbank sold all their Nvidia shares on Jan 10,2019, before Nvidia prewarned their Q4 miss the day before AMD’s Q4 ER. First, why would Softbank completely cash out of Nvidia; second, Softbank is very likely in the know about Nvidia’s impending miss.
